August 11, 2005 - Presentation at the Rural Sociology Conference - Tampa, Florida, USA
Presentation: "From Peasantry to Dachas to Ringing Cedars Kin Estates: Subsistence Growing as a Social Institution in Russia".
Presenter: Leonid Sharashkin, editor of the Ringing Cedars Series.
Venue: the Rural Sociology Conference, held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Tampa, Florida, USA, from August 10-12, 2005.
Time and place: Thursday, August 11, from 1:30-3:00 pm at Ballroom V at Hyatt Regency Tampa Hotel (211 N. Tampa St., Tampa, Florida 33602).
Description: Social institutions that enable subsistence growing can be recognized over millennia of Russian history, reflecting a profound aspect of Russian culture. This paper traces their history from the peasantry through the dacha movement to the recent emergence of the social movement, the Ringing Cedars of Russia. Drawing on Chayanov, agrarian values theory, and the insights of contemporary Russian author Vladimir Megre, we make the argument that the subsistence lifestyle associated with Ringing Cedars kin estates and eco-villages reflects the reemergence of a commitment to a spiritual connection with nature that has a long tradition in Russia. The resurgence of subsistence growing, and the volume of food being produced on small private plots, bring into question the dismissal of self provisioning as an insignificant supplement to industrial agriculture. Instead, we consider that the Ringing Cedars movement may represent a silent revolution reshaping the country's ideological, social, political and economic landscapes.
Notes: the Rural Sociological Society, founded in 1937, is a respected organization of 1000 members, and the conference is attended by hundreds of academics and professionals from America and beyond.

August 13, 2005 - Workshop at the American Community Gardening Association Conference - Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA
Workshop: "Spiritual Permaculture: Russian Gardening Revolution".
Presenter: Leonid Sharashkin, editor of the Ringing Cedars Series.
Venue: the 26th Annual American Community Gardening Association Conference, held at the University of Minnesota (West Bank) in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA, from August 12-14, 2005.
Time and place: Saturday, August 13, from 10:30-11:45 am, in Mondale Hall, University of Minnesota (West Bank) Law School, Room 15.
Description: in Russia, 35 million families grow their own food in dacha gardens, collectively producing over 50% of the country's total agricultural output. This massive self-provisioning effort is now growing into a nation-wide back-to-the-Earth / eco-village movement sparked by The Ringing Cedars Series of books, which revealed gardening techniques for re-creating and maintaining the mutually beneficial spiritual connection between us and living nature. The workshop presents these practices and their cultural foundations.
Notes: The Ringing Cedars book exhibit will be on for the duration of the conference.

July 23, 2005 - Dachnik Day Celebration - Licking, Missouri, USA
After the idea of a Dachnik Day and an All-Earth Holiday was set forth in "The Ringing Cedars of Russia", originally published in 1997, this celebration of our connectedness to the Earth has spread all over Russia and beyond. One of the first American July 23 celebrations with an emphasis on native Ozark plants and natural landscapes was held on an organic wild crop farm near the town of Licking in central Missouri (south of Rolla), midst the beautiful Ozark mountains. The celebration ran from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm and was attended by over 50 people from all over Missouri (including St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield, Columbia, the Ozarks, etc.), from Kansas and Arkansas. Read the flyer (.pdf file).
